During the last few months, Big Man has been getting paid weekly. At the first of the new year, they switched him to every two weeks. Which meant I needed to revamp the way I plan our meals and shop for groceries. We also had a large bill that needed to be taken care of, along rent and other bill, so we knew this would be a tight month.
The first thing I did was to make a list of some of our favorite meals. Then I searched the internet to find some new meals to try out. I found a few and printed them off. Then I went through the list and wrote down everything I would need to make these meals. Some of the meals I had written down, I already had the ingredients for, so those weren’t added in to the grocery list.
Chili
Spaghetti
Steaks
Lasagna
Salisbury Steak
Meatballs in Mushroom Gravy
Hamburgers
Not-So-Sloppy Joes
Roast
Beef Stew
Breakfast
Leftovers
Layered Enchilada Casserole
Chicken & Dumplings
Chicken Nuggets
Pizza
Fried Chicken
Tacos
Crescent Dogs
Once I had this extensive list complete, it was off to the store. Usually, when I go to the store, if I’ve got the family with me, I end up forgetting some things, or getting things I didn’t have on the list, but this time, we were lucky. I got everything I needed without any extras. The fun part came when we got home. Getting it all put away.
There was one week where Big Man was out of town, so the kids and I were able to eat pretty light, which helped save on what was used also.
With the exception of having to purchase things like bread, cereal and milk, I’ve made it through the month with the groceries we bought at the beginning of the month. Today is the end of the month, and I’m cooking that last meal tonight!
Now it’s time to make another list, tomorrow is payday!
Menu planning is a chore I do not look forward to. But is really does help to stretch the groceries.
